The Emotions

Our Emotions

We live in an emotional world these days and yet for the most part we are often struggling to understand how emotions affect us and how we can embrace them in healthy ways.

In Human Design we see the Emotions Center as the pleasure center, but also, potentially the “pain” center. It is the Center of sex, food, addictions, digestion, breathing, desires, delight, despair and our spiritedness. It is where we come to experience all the highs and lows of life that we feel inside ourselves through what we can loosely describe as ‘wave patterns.’

Some emotional waves are easy to ride or surf. Other waves throw us completely.

The old saying of “what goes up has to go down” is completely true for the Emotions Center. So, for as much as we engage with pleasure when we go up, we have the possibility of having an equal measure of experiencing pain as our wave goes down.

You might say that if we know pain is part of experiencing Emotions, then why bother seeking out pleasure at all? And here is perhaps one of the greatest puzzles that exist….that with a little understanding of your Human Design Chart can be clarified :
The secret to handling Emotions is : not getting attached to outcomes. “Oh, it is going to be so great when……!” or, “I cannot cope with the feeling that I will get when…..!”

Focusing on an outcome brings tension, anxiety and shortness of breath which in turn brings a decrease in clarity about our surrounding circumstances. Take a deep breath and feel, from your belly, into the situation confronting you. Witness it as dispassionately as you can.

If you have defined Emotions in your chart (the Emotions Center is colored brown), you are constantly cycling through emotional highs and lows, whether you are aware of it or not. Embrace the cycle because it is your nature. Consider the timeless phrase of wisdom : “This too will pass!” You have Emotional Authority. Find the Emotional Clarity within you that has little or nothing to do with an outcome but more to do with your ongoing journey through life.

If you have undefined Emotions in your chart (the Emotions Center is colored white and with at least one Gate in that Center colored black or pink or striped black and pink), then you are constantly cycling through the emotional waves produced by other people. By paying attention to your own Authority it will tell you whether you are clear to commit to any experience or not.

If you have open Emotions in your chart (the Emotions Center is colored white and no Gates in that center are colored) then you are susceptible to ignoring Emotion altogether as being too crazy (“What’s all the fuss about?”) and can appear a little cool to everyone else. Or, you can be thrown for a loop whenever you are confronted in situations where people become overly emotional, either excited or depressed. Again, trust you own perfect Authority to tell you whether any experience is appropriate for you or not in any given moment.

Remember, we are all here to live our own personal lives, becoming more and more aware of the effects that we have on ourselves for the choices we make for ourselves. Riding waves of emotion, all the highs and lows that life offers us, can be great fun and wonderfully fulfilling if we remain clear in ourselves and trust in our own perfect way through life according to our own Human Design.

January 26, 2010

Happy New Year!  And I am talking about the New Year that starts on January 22nd 2010.

You might have thought that the New Year started on January 1st and according to the Roman calendar it does, but through Human Design we have found that in fact a whole new experience for our Earth starts when the sun enters Hexagram/Gate 41, and this happens on January 22nd 2010.

Let me explain.

The IChing contains 64 Hexagrams which correspond to the 64 Gates in the Human Design Life Chart.  In making the calculation for a Life Chart, we find the placements of the Sun, Moon and Planets around us at the moment of our birth.  The 64 Hexagrams are equally spaced in the sky around us, and on January 22nd, the Sun, relative to the earth, will enter into the Hexagram 41. And this affects everyone and everything directly, at least for 5 days …. and longer if you set an intention for yourself.

Hexagram 41 relates to our Imagination and exercising our vision to draw to us experiences of all sorts. Imagination can open us to anything, real or fantastic, possible or impossible.  There is a difference between exercising constructive imagination and just day-dreaming.  Using Imagination clearly can take away our inhibitions and indicate something to us that we are driven to pursue.

During this time, when the Sun enters Gate 41 on January 22nd and exits on January 27th, we all have the opportunity to be open to our dreams, to use our imagination to find a vision that resonates within us and carries us into the year ahead.

What is it in your life that you would like to improve?  Just because something called economy is having a difficult time, does that need to affect your feelings of abundance?  What are the habits in your life that are more like a ball and chain that keep you weighed down than wings that help you soar?  Is there something you fight with that when considered in a clearer light could be creatively bypassed altogether? Do you have a healthy balance in your life of giving and receiving?  Is there a tendency for you to be hard on yourself for no real reason?  Can you see how that happens and how to get over it?  Are there stories to be told whose time have come?  Check it out!

Be clear in your vision and have a great year!

Happy New Year!

Michael Jackson’s Human Design Life Chart

June 29, 2009

Michael Jackson  August 29th 1958 – June 26th 2009Michael Jackson jog

Born in Gary, Indiana in 1958, Michael had a single activation in his Life chart, that of Community.  Even if his life wasn’t known to millions of devoted fans, a glance at this Human Design Life Chart reveals the “real Michael.” His whole life centered around his family, whether his blood relatives or the millions of people worldwide who identified themselves with “Jacko,” the King of Pop.

His defined Centers are the Heart and Emotions Centers, activated consciously with his Sun and Earth placements.  You could say that the sun shone through his heart and his feelings were always involved with the people and his attunement with the world around him.

By Design, Michael is a Projector with Emotional, feeling Authority and a 1/3 Profile.  To learn more about each of these aspects, see my book, Human Design : Discover the Person You Were Born To Be.

But here are a few tidbits that give us a look into Michael’s nature :

Projectors seek recognition and will often do almost anything to get it.  Those who have Emotional Authority have to learn the lesson of patience in order to find their feeling clarity that is not attached to either the highs or lows that come through their Emotional nature.  Many times we have seen Michael suffer when he has jumped into some action or commitment without considering a larger picture and his naturally changing moods.

People witha 1/3 profile are exploring throughout their lifetime, trying a kaleidoscope of material, life and people experiences.  Often a 1/3 profile shifts their lifestyle leaving a great variety of people and experiences in their wake.  1/3’s have a need to keep moving on sometimes regardless if anyone is keeping up with them.

In Michael’s Life Chart, he has a defined Heart Center.  Any one who has a defined Heart, the center of Willpower, needs to be very watchful for how they employ their willpower, simply because they can accomplish something in 5 minutes that is going to take someone with an undefined Heart an hour.  If they continue to press on with one achievement after another they can literally end up exhausting their Willpower and eventually straining their heart.  So, anyone with a defined Heart has to be watchful of two things :

1. That they pace themselves and allow themselves rest from time to time, to recuperate their Heart’s energy, and also, politely, to let others catch up.

2. They have to be very particular to whom and to what they commit themselves.

Most people do not have their Heart Center defined, and if someone with an undefined Heart gets around someone, like Michael, they will often try to get them to commit himself to their causes and use his willpower on their own behalf.  If Michael isn’t watchful, he can strain his heart by giving too much to too many.

The Community Channel relates particularly through the sense of touch and familiarity.  It enjoys sharing food with friends and family and it has a winning smile. Through Gate 40, it seeks solace and the space to recuperate.  Gate 37 on the Emotions end, seeks out friendship as a natural state of being, and with Line 1, as in Michael’s chart, is seen as a role model for friendship.  Consequently, Michael was felt as friend by everyone who met him, whether Michael had space, time and energy for them or not.

Gate 26 in Michael’s Heart Center, activated by Saturn in Line 3, gave Michael an urge to compete, to be the best, but also gave him a certain sensation that almost everyone, particularly “serious” people, like parents, adults, lawyers, bankers and promoters would bring complications to his life.

Gate 36, in his Emotions Center, in Line 2, activated by his unconscious Mars, and therefore most likely an inherited trait from his paternal grandfather, nudged him to seek assistance from all available sources when he could no longer see his way forward.  Consequently, Michael surrounded himself with a troupe of advisors and staff who very often, would be drawing from Michael’s resources rather than actually adding anything through their presence.

With two Centers defined, Michael has 7 Centers that are undefined or open in his chart.  This form of Life Chart implies that he was very empathic, picking up everything from everyone near and far.  Sometimes the influences of people around him, particularly the “serious” people would have felt like an overwhelming force.  Michael would often feel obliged to avoid such people at all costs unless a situation became desperate and he would have to put up with them.  In another light, this openness in his Life Chart, would have given him the means to be elusive, perhaps quick on his toes, reflecting back what he picked up from the people and the world around him and demonstrating it through his movements, music and song.

It is said that Michael was prone to great physical pain in his body, which gave him the inclination to take painkillers and other forms of physical relief.  Typically, painkillers have a strong chemical nature, and someone with an undefined Spleen Center, as has Michael, their body does not process “heavy” chemicals too well.

People who have an undefined Self Center can be a guide or way-shower for others, yet not always have the most consistent reassurance of direction or purpose for themself.  Michaels Gate 7 with the 5th Line activated by Venus gave him the attributes of a natural and competent leader.  It is said that anyone who performed with him was often spellbound by the command he had of his art and the work he produced.

Open minded, with a single Gate 11, the Gate of Peace, in the Mind Center, activated by unconscious Saturn in the 1st Line, inclined him to espouse worldwide cooperation towards finding peace in the world as an obvious foundation for life.

Michael’s open Crown and Root Centers left him uneasy with pressure that was exerted into his life from outside.  Houses behind large gates and reclusive environments would have been his preference until he felt the love of his true fans calling him out.

His undefined Throat with Gate 16, his boyish and adventurous enthusiasm, Gate 23, his authoritative pronouncements and Gate 33, gave him his real need for recuperation to find the depth of his own life story …that he could then perform for others.

His undefined Sacral with Gate 59 and Line 3 implied he had a certain promiscuity; Gate 42 gave him a very expansive view of life; Gate 3 found him always presenting new media to the world, and Gate 9 gave him  an inbuilt drive to be detail-oriented, with the caveat that he sometimes missed the one vital item that could shatter any well-intentioned plans.  His Gate 29, the Gate of “Yes!” probably propelled him into all sorts of commitments, that if he had known to trust his Human Design Authority more, might well have been set aside.

That he gave of his heart is the truth of his life.  With ten 1st Lines and seven 3rd Lines in his Life Chart, Michael always brought the sense of perfection to anything he touched and at the same time, transforming his creations into some new, sometimes dramatically new forms.

That his heart gave out in the end seems to be the story we will ponder during our lifetimes, and probably in the end, it was the case because he never considered that there might be a limit to just how much he could give and that his dear heart could not keep up with all the fun, spectacle and delight “Jacko” could produce.
